Multi-scale Nonlinear Turbulence Dynamics Studies

چکیده
Critical gradient transport dynamics, breaking of gyro-Bohm transport scaling, transport bifurcation, and transport barrier formation all have a profound effect on confinement in magnetic fusion devices, and are thought to be both generated and regulated by the nonlinear interaction between gradient-driven small scaled ( k!"s <1) drift turbulence and larger meso-scaled structures such as zonal flows and streamers with k!"s << 1 [1, 2] that are generated from the turbulence. Zonal flow formation from turbulence, regulation of the turbulence by the zonal flow, effects of flow damping rate on turbulence saturation, and introduction of device-scaled transport events due to the breakdown of zonal flows and formation of propagating structures are the key nonlinear physics processes that lead to these macroscopic confinement properties. Direct study of the underlying physics requires simultaneous spatiotemporal turbulence measurements that cannot be made in existing large confinement devices. Suitably designed and diagnosed smaller laboratory experiments such as the TJ-K toroidal device and the CSDX, VINETA, and LMD linear devices have recently provided direct experimental study of these issues, and thus provide a detailed stress test of theory and simulation.

Multi-scale gyrokinetic simulation of tokamak plasmas: enhanced heat loss due to cross-scale coupling of plasma turbulence
The transport of heat in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas is dominated by the complex nonlinear dynamics of plasma turbulence. In magnetically confined plasmas used for fusion energy research, turbulence is responsible for cross-field transport that limits the performance of tokamak reactors. We report a set of novel gyrokinetic simulations that capture ion and electron-scale turbulence sim...

[1] The Earth’s magnetosphere is a spatially extended nonlinear system driven far from equilibrium by the turbulent solar wind. During substorms it exhibits both global and multi-scale features which reconciliation has been a long standing issue. This paper presents a data-derived model of the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling that combines a nonlinear dynamical description of the global featur...

متن کاملMulti-scale Interaction between MHD, Turbulence and Transport in Tokamak Plasmas
The recent achievement in the simulation study of multi-scale interaction among MHD, turbulence and transport is reported. Firstly, we discuss the formation and collapse of Internal Transport Barrier (ITB) in Tokamaks. The meso-scale structures are generated by three-wave interaction among drift wave turbulence. These structures interact each other, which generate the global mode around barrier...
متن کاملComparative studies of nonlinear ITG and ETG dynamics
It is shown that the ITG-ETG symmetry is nonlinearly broken due to the different response of respectively electrons and ions to Zonal Flows (ZF). ITG is dominated by ITG-ZF nonlinear interactions and turbulence spreading, resulting in size-scaling of the associated turbulent transport. Meanwhile, nonlinear toroidal mode coupling dominates ETG saturation and ETG-ZF interactions enter on the long...
